I’m happy to say that I found me a partner that pretty much has the same mindset when it comes to parenting. When it comes to discipline and values, we are on the same page. But we just ran into our first speed bump. Let me explain…

If you have been keeping, even just a half an eye on the news, you have heard about the recent school shootings. It has shook me to my core. I started thinking about investing in alternative schooling options when my son and daughter get high school age. I thought that, for now at least, my kindergartner is safe.

That was until…

There was a shooting here in Maryland, and although it was a 60 miles away from my son’s school, it made me even more nervous. The same day of that shooting, my son come home with a letter in his book bag. It stated that there was a suspicious person on school grounds the day before. My heart skipped a beat. When my husband came home, I handed him the letter. Later that night, when the kids were sleeping, I told him I wasn’t sure about this whole public school thing.

He seemed a little taken aback by my statement. Facts are, as he stated, but we agreed, whether or not our children are in public school, there will always be risks.

Here is the issue as a parent: is the risk of being potentially shot or abducted in school a risk we are willing to take? Is it possible to educate our children on what to do without scaring them half to death? Especially when we as parents are scared for there safety.

I don’t want my children to be one of those socially awkward home schooled kids…not all home schooled kids are like that but that does happen. But I’d rather risk them being socially awkward and alive against being well adjusted and harmed in ANY way.

So what are we to do? After an hour-long conversation, my husband and I agreed to research all our opinions. Is there a way to get the best of both worlds: a safer environment and well-adjusted children. I can say that I am grateful to be an entrepreneur. It allows us the freedom to choose options outside of the public school system. As we continue to make our decision, I’ll keep you all posted.
